Instagram’s Threads Aims to Create a “Less Angry Place” for Communities, Says Instagram Head

In a conversation with The Verge, Instagram’s head, Adam Mosseri, reveals that the newly launched Threads platform is intentionally designed to offer a different experience than its rival, Twitter. With over 78 million users within days of its launch, Threads seeks to become a public square for Instagram communities that have not fully embraced Twitter. Mosseri emphasizes that the platform aims to provide a space for conversations that is less focused on news and political discourse.

Threads, an Instagram spin-off, has garnered significant attention due to its connection with the popular photo-sharing app. However, Mosseri emphasizes that Threads does not aim to compete directly with Twitter in terms of user count or content. While politics and hard news may find their way onto the platform, Mosseri clarifies that these topics will not be encouraged. Instead, Threads will focus on other areas of interest, including sports, music, fashion, beauty, and entertainment.

The decision to veer away from news and political content stems from Mosseri’s concerns about the associated scrutiny, negativity, and integrity risks. Although political discourse and news might drive engagement and revenue, Mosseri believes that these potential benefits are not worth compromising the platform’s intended purpose.

Following Elon Musk’s acquisition of Twitter, many users have been searching for alternative platforms. However, while Threads appeared promising initially, it may not meet the expectations of users seeking a new home. Nonetheless, alternatives such as BlueSky and active Mastodon instances continue to cater to those looking for different social media experiences.
