Dipa Karmakar Overcomes Hardships, Makes Comeback for Asian Games Trials

Renowned Indian gymnast Dipa Karmakar is elated to have successfully participated in the trials for the upcoming Hangzhou Asian Games, marking her comeback after a 21-month suspension due to a doping violation. Despite the challenges she faced in recent years, the 29-year-old athlete emerged on top in the all-around event during the trials held at the Kalinga Stadium.

Expressing her happiness, Dipa stated, “I am very happy that I could give the trials after the hardships I went through in the last few years.” Reflecting on her performance, she acknowledged that although it wasn’t perfect, she considers it a significant comeback. Dipa expressed her determination to give more than 100 percent in her future endeavors.

Dipa had previously participated in the 2018 Jakarta Asian Games but failed to secure a podium finish, missing out on qualifying for her pet event, the vault, and finishing fifth in the women’s balance beam. She withdrew from the women’s artistic gymnastics final due to a knee injury. Additionally, she underwent surgeries on her back and knees and faced a 21-month suspension after testing positive for a banned substance.

Dipa, known for her exceptional execution of the “Produnova vault” or the “vault of death,” mentioned her training in Agartala over the past months and her determination to be selected for the Asian Games. She emphasized the importance of training on all four apparatuses for young gymnasts aspiring to qualify for the Olympics, highlighting the need for all-around gymnastics skills.
