COSCO SHIPPING Advances Green Maritime Industry with Landmark Methanol Fuel Supply System for Mega Containerships

COSCO SHIPPING Heavy Industry Technology (Weihai) has inked a landmark deal with COSCO SHIPPING Heavy Industry (Yangzhou) to provide a methanol fuel supply system for four 16,000 TEU (Twenty-Foot Equivalent Unit) containerships. This move marks the first major project in China to supply methanol fuel for both the primary and auxiliary engines of ships.

The methanol fuel supply system, dubbed “Marine Shield” (Haidun), leverages dual-core redundancy and PID closed-loop control to ensure the system’s reliability and stability. Furthermore, COSCO SHIPPING’s double filter design guarantees the dependability of the engine fuel supply.

In order to meet the specific needs of large 16,000 TEU containerships, COSCO SHIPPING has developed a tailored solution that includes decentralized module control and operation parameter integration monitoring. The aim is to boost the safety and reliability of methanol refuelling, lightering, and supply. This innovative approach has won the approval of ship owners.

This groundbreaking development follows the recent news of the German government ratifying its decision to allow the acquisition of a 24.9 percent minority stake in Container Terminal Tollerort (CTT) by COSCO SHIPPING Ports Limited (CSPL).

In a related development, last month saw COSCO SHIPPING Heavy Industry (Yangzhou) commence construction on its second 700 TEU electric containership (N998), which is owned by COSCO SHIPPING Development. This continued commitment to sustainable, green shipping solutions underscores COSCO SHIPPING’s position as a leader in the move towards decarbonizing the maritime industry.
